002-3 South Korean President Kim Dae jung signs postcard |
01 Overview |
Kim Dae jung is a legendary figure. During his 40 year political career, the Grim Reaper brushed past him five times, he was placed under house arrest 55 times, imprisoned for six years, and exiled abroad twice Despite being assassinated multiple times and surviving great hardships, due to a leg disease left behind by a car accident assassination, he walked unsteadily and limped throughout his life, earning him the nickname of the "undead bird" of South Korean politics and the "Mandela" of Asia. In 1997, at the age of 72, with the widespread support of the South Korean people, Kim Dae jung participated in the presidential election for the fourth time, he finally succeeded and officially took over the presidential palace in the Blue House on February 25, 1998 After taking office, he vigorously promoted his policy of ethnic harmony Internally united the people, led the country out of the economic crisis that swept across Asia Under his leadership, the former president and his political rival Chun Doo hwan, who were sentenced to death for the December 12 and May 18, 1996 events, were granted amnesty He also advocated for the implementation of the Sunshine Policy towards North Korea and personally visited Pyongyang on June 13, 2000, signing a joint declaration with Kim Jong il to promote national reconciliation. Kim Dae jung has deep feelings for China and the Chinese people. Before he was elected president, he visited China three times in various capacities. He believed that: "Historically, South Korea has been greatly influenced by China in terms of politics, economy, religion and culture. In November 1998, shortly after he became president, he began his visit to China again |
My request autography postcard was sent out on November 17, 1998, taking advantage of this opportunity That year, I seemed very lucky. On December 4th, I received a reply from the South Korean Presidential Office, which was sealed in a large letter In addition to a postcard signed by the President, there is also a reply letter signed by Jin Yuxi, the Assistant Director of the Presidential Office |
I have been considering and researching the stamp used for this postcard for a long time in order to achieve the best philatelic effect The content and format of the stamps should be closely related to Kim Dae jung's visit to China, and the total face value of the stamps should meet the requirement of 10.7 yuan postage for international air registered postcards at that time For this purpose, I purchased and read materials such as Kim Dae jung's autobiography "My Life, My Path - Kim Dae jung's Autobiography" and "Chinese Philatelic Encyclopedia Knowledge". Finally, I decided to use the PP11 rose regular postage postcard issued by China on May 16, 1998, and attach four postage stamps on it: |
1. Selected the T-58 "Xinyou Year" stamp issued on November 5, 1981 In the preface written by Kim Dae jung for the release of the Chinese version of his autobiography, he said, "In my childhood... I often heard people say that it takes about two hours to sail from our island of Hoi Yi to reach Red Island. On Red Island, every clear morning, the sound of China's rooster crowing can be heard from the other side of the sea... Therefore, I feel that China is a country not far away... In East Asia, the rooster crowing has always symbolized good luck. If 'My Life, My Road' can be seen by Chinese readers as the dawn rooster crowing of South Korea, then I have nothing else to ask for." Based on the meaning of this passage, I have decided to use this stamp, which has a face value of 8 cents. In the past twenty years, its market price has appreciated hundreds of times. This ticket design features a crowing rooster created by the famous Chinese painter Zhang Ding. The original painting uses exaggerated and romantic techniques to depict a colorful and magnificent flower rooster, which stands tall with its neck pulled up, uplifted and trembling, rebellious and majestic, with a majestic gaze. It seems like a warrior is sounding the horn of progress. (See "Chinese Philatelic Encyclopedia Knowledge") "Sing the cock and the world is white". In the traditional culture of Chinese people for thousands of years, the cock is often the representative of light and the symbol of diligence. In Kim Dae jung's autobiography, it has become an envoy to communicate the friendship between the people of China and South Korea. Here, using this stamp is very suitable.:

2. The 1995-27 stamp "China Korea Submarine Cable System Opening" issued on February 8, 1996 was selected. This stamp is issued to commemorate the completion of the 550 kilometer submarine cable between China and South Korea at the end of 1995. This optical cable has landed in Qingdao, China and Tai'an, South Korea. The pattern on the top half of the stamp indicates the landing sites of the optical cable in both countries, with Tiananmen Square in China and the South Gate of Seoul in South Korea painted above the landing sites. This gate, also known as Chongli Gate, was built in 1398 and is known as a symbol of Korea. The representative buildings of the two countries symbolize the friendship between the two peoples with a long history. Therefore, it is also very appropriate to choose this stamp in the request autography for Kim Dae jung |
3. Selected the R24M souvenir sheet "Red Buddha" released on August 10, 1988 The image is taken from the Western Wei Bodhisattva statue in the Maijishan Grottoes Kim Dae jung was a devout Christian From the perspective of the three major religions in the world, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, although their purposes and doctrines are different, their essence is still the same. Therefore, the red Buddha stamps familiar to the Chinese people are selected here A more important reason is that its face value is 10 yuan, which allows for fewer stamps with lower face values to be affixed and free up space So the blank edges of the souvenir sheet have been completely torn off, leaving only the stamp itself |
4. Selected a residential stamp with a face value of 2 cents mainly to raise enough postage Of course, residential also represent ordinary people, and pasting them here also has its special significance |
On the back of the postcard, a letter of request printed in English was attached, and at the bottom of the letter, two stamps, 1 and 2, were specially introduced to Kim Dae jung (the English of the letter can be found here) President Kim Dae jung signed his name in Korean on his left side, with a solemn tone and a balance of firmness and softness, reflecting the broad mindedness of a seasoned and persevering politician. To the right of the signature, there is a purple landing postmark, all in Korean, with a clear date of November 24, 1998. Below Kim Dae jung's signature, there is a small line of text that reads 811-2402. Normally, this line should be the signature date, but its specific explanation remains to be studied |
The large envelope used for reply is a special envelope for the Office of the President of South Korea There is its logo in the upper left corner The original and landing postmarks are complete The top and bottom of a letter from the Presidential Office are fully marked, with concise text and appropriate etiquette It is an important material for studying the protocol systems of governments in various countries |

On August 18, 2009, the news of former South Korean President Kim Dae jung's passing came to my ears from television news, which shocked and saddened me Kim Dae jung is an internationally renowned legendary figure and politician that I have been following for many years Three months ago, I saw Former South Korean President Lu Wuxian's funeral broadcast and he is there and well. I never expected him to suddenly pass away so soon! |
For me, foreign politicians are very prestigious people, mostly just admired and respected, with little emotional attachment I remember Stalin passed away in 1953 when I was 16 years old. I gathered on the playground of a high school to listen to the radio. The principal cried first, and everyone cried. I also cried along, but I couldn't explain why I was crying. After more than fifty years of turbulent changes, seems become numb to deaths many foreign political figures. Only this time, I feel sad from the bottom of my heart Watching the special report on TV, watching him rise from a poor peasant background with a young ambition, but with a fate full of twists and turns, enduring hardships: time and time again imprisoned and imprisoned Torture, exile, assassination, and even being sentenced to death, his unsteady gait always reminds people of the pain he suffered physically However, he remained steadfast and achieved his political aspirations at the age of 74 The reason why he moved me is his integrity that transcends positions and borders, his unwavering personality charm that transcends honor and disgrace, and his emotional charm. His philatelic signatures will become treasures passed down to future generations, leaving valuable materials for philatelic culture |
