This is a
group very valuable philatelic matter and information, that spent for
3 years and experienced a lot of difficulties and twists and turns. It
recorded many important activity and historical events about the independence
of East Timor, the UNTAET (United Nations Transitional Administration
in East Timor ). As well as some of the important activities of its president
- the former East Timor independence leader Xanana Gusmao, important officers
and peacekeeping police officers of UNTAET, the British ambassador to
Indonesia. And the cross-correlation of important postal history before
and after the independence of East Timor between China, Indonesia, Australia,
East Timor, UPU etc. postal administrations. Many of them signed postcards,
envelopes, letters, postmarks, stamps, labels etc., and to be recorded
history by them is very valuable . Gusmao is known as a "president who yearns to lose the election" (see here, this may also be the only person in the world) . So it is very rare or even unique in the world philatelic history.

The
first and second group |
This is very
important philatelic matter for East Timor's independent historical
progress. Gusmao visit China in January 2000, in that time he only is
the leader of East Timor independent movement. East Timor is in disarray.
He busy working for the cause of independence for to get help. The postcard
recorded these progress. His signature experiencing a very difficult
and tortuous postal routes (see http://hty66.com/engweb/eng2-020/eng2-020-2.html
). I believe that such an autographed postcard In that special period,
it is extremely rare in the world, even maybe unique.

The postcard
used 3 pieces commemorative stamps: One is 1995-22-2 " 50th Anniversary
of United Nations" (issued date is Oct.24,1995); One is J108 "
United Nations Decade for Woman 1976-1985" (date is Mar.8,1985); Other
one is 1997-18-1 " The Temple of Heaven" (in Beijing)(date is
Oct.16,1997). The meaning of the stamps is very clear. |
2 photos
in the back of the postcard. One is a photo that is China vice chairman
Hu Jintao is meeting with Gusmao; Other one is a Gusmao's photo downloaded
from the Internet. This photo reflects Gusmao's dauntless striving figure
for national liberation, it is a very touching photo. In despite of it occupied
many space in the postcard, but I still use it. I believe it also could
cause Gusmao's brief remember for his striving history. |
The date
of Gusmao's autograph is Apr.11,2000, place is Dili. It is 71 days from
my postcard was sent. the reply letter is 21 days from Gusmao autographed
to received in Nanjing |
Because
there is a E-mail address on the back of the envelop, I sent a E-mail for
thanksgiving on May 6. I received a courteous reply E-mail on May 9 soon,
the signature of the E-mail is a officer of office of the CNRT president
Mr. Kirsty Sword. |

The
fourth group
This is a group post matter
between I and Mr. Yongge Zhao. Mr. Zhao originally was an official of
the Chinese Ministry of Construction, later was sent to participate in
the work of the UNTAET and as its officer in East Timor for 3 years. I
know him through his an article in a Chinese magazine "World Affairs".
His postcards, letter and many photo, video.... recorded some of the important
events before and after independence of East Timor. There also are some
Chinese information, I can free translate and provide these information
to buyer in the future if need
The group is very important
philatelic historic information. It recorded a difficult and complex
post relationship between Esat Timor, Indonesia, Australia, UPU and UNTAET...before
and after independence in East Timor, and recorded the first presidential
election process
|
|
|
|
4-1
and 4-2 First mailed personalized postcard and returned by Indonesia
post office. Below right label wrote: " All Postal Services
could not be provided to the East Timor due to The UPU Circular
January 31st 2000. All Mails destined to above direction will
be RETUNRED on the debit of The Origin Postal administration"
(See http://hty66.com/engweb/eng2-020/eng2-020-5.html ) |
|
|
4-3
and 4-4 The personalized postcard autographed by Mr. Zhao. Because
the UPU inform, In order to mail the postcard to Mr. Zhao, I have
to find my friends Mr. G and Mr. Y in the Beijing international
postal bureau. They help me by way of their friends in Australia
post office to transfer the postcard to Mr. Zhao in East Timor,
then Mr. Zhao autograph and returned to me! This is very interesting
philatelic story, There also are several Chinese letters recorded
the history. |
|
|
4-5
and 4-6 This a very important philatelic matter. It recorded the
history by way of the philatelic way to the first presidential
election process and the UNTAET'S officers participation and supervision
of the process: (1) Its post date is second day (May 22, 2002
in the postmark) of the election (May 21, 2002), because the May
21,2002 is Sunday that day the post office in East Timor is not
open for business. (2) It use UN'S stamp that is UN unique issued
stamp for a country, and covered "DILI CORREIOS TIMOR LESTE
2002.05.22" despatching postmark. (3) Its word and photos
show Gusmao and another president candidate's figure, and Ms.
Zhao himself and special representative of UN Mr. Sergio de Mello
(He Unfortunately died in an explosion in Iraq on Aug.19,2003
as special representative for Iraq of UN Secretary General Kofi
Annan); (4) It use a postcard issued by the "UNTAET--East
Timor Public Administration" . Its back side is the police
of East Timor (Graduation ceremony at the Police Academy, Dili,
August 2001) and covered red landing postmark--"Nanjing (南京)2002.05.06".
Because of these characteristics, I believe it is one of the
world's most unique and precious postcards, especially for East
Timor and "UNTA ET". |
|
|
|
|
4-7,8,9,10 These are Mr. Zhao used envelops for mail to me. Used UN'S stamp, covered clear despatching and landing postmark. They all are through the Australian Darwin post office relay (See http://hty66.com/engweb/eng2-020/eng2-020-7.html). In the back of first envelop mailed on Sep.10, 2001, Mr. Zhao wrote a few lines: "From Yongge Zhao Dili District Administration UNTAET P.O.BOX 2436 Darwin, NT0801 Australia", the code is the same with the following another mail written code (see image 5-4).
It is confirmed that at that time all East Timor UNTAET foreign mail are transferred by Australian Darwin this mailbox code. in the lower right corner of the front of the envelop, there is a purple label "CORREIOS DE TIMOR LESTE", Its meaning needs further research. |
|
Note: About
the United Nations stamps: 2000.4.29 UN for East Timor issued a set of two
stamps. Its pattern is excellent. It is that the UN specially issued stamp
only for a national . The stamps without par value. Red is for domestic
use ( marked DOM. ), blue for international use (marked INT.). there is
a UNTAET message in the upper right corner of the stamps. According to Mr.
Zhao told, every stamp selling price is 50 US cents in that time. |

by way of the philatelic way. I request her for my postcard signature
and got the group important philatelic matter

in the UN peacekeeping force. The photos from Chinese newspaper |
|
|
5-3
and 5-4 The envelop by Ms. Wang. Its two black despatching postmark
(front and back side in the envelop) is very clear (May 11,2001).
Its back label is very important for philatelist's research work.
"FROM WAMG RAN (The writer note: A slip of the pen, it must
be FROM WANG RAN) CP1916 NATIONAL INVESTIGATION UNIT, CIVPOL HQ
UNTAET P.O.BOX 2436 DARWIN, NT 0801 AUSTRALIA". It is
confirmed again that at that time all East Timor UNTAET foreign
mail are transferred by Australian Darwin this mailbox code. The red landing postmark is May 24,2001. The post time only 13
days , it is very fast in that time! (see http://hty66.com/engweb/eng2-020/eng2-020-8.html) |
